Add these leaf calendar numbers to your classroom collection of fall calendar numbers. You can use them as part of your traditional or linear calendar. Or you can use the leaf number cards to teach and practice so many early math skills with young children.

The leaf numbers would be a great addition to your fall activities for preschoolers and kindergarten kids. You can also integrate the numbers into a tree theme or a leaf unit. The numbered leaves are very easy to prep, too. Which makes them a win-win in my book!

Leaf Calendar Numbers

Read below for some prepping tips, as well as a few ideas for using the numbered leaves with your students. I might not be a fan of preschool worksheets, but I love making printables like this because of the multitude of ways the kids can use them!

How to Prep the Leaf Number Cards

First, I suggest grabbing the supplies you need. Here’s what I use to prep calendar numbers (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

And that’s it! You can use a paper cutter instead of scissors if that’s easier for you. Be sure to get any items you’d like to use in conjunction with the leaf calendar numbers. Some ideas:

And then it’s time to get those numbered leaves ready to go! First, go to the bottom of this post and get the download link. Next, save the file to your computer. Open the document up in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader. Print as many copies as you’d like and cut the pages apart into individual cards. Finally, laminate the numbered cards.

How to Use the Leaf Calendar Numbers with Kids

Once the numbers are prepped, it’s time to introduce them to the kids. As I mentioned earlier, there are so many ways to use the numbered leaves!

Here are some of our favorites:

  • Use them for their original intended purpose . . . as cards for the calendar in your classroom!
  • Have your students put the cards in numerical order from 0 to 35 (yes, there are a few extra numbers beyond the usual 1-31 just in case). Once the kids do that, see if they can order the numbers in reverse numerical order, too.

  • Pair the leaf numbers with another set of number cards. Our acorn calendar numbers would work well, I think. Introduce, review, and/or practice patterning using the two sets of numbers.
  • Measure items in your classroom or out on the playground using the numbered leaves. Or even the kids themselves!
  • Make a simple sensory writing tray for the kids to practice writing numbers in. They can use the leaf calendar numbers as visual cues.
  • Let the kids use math manipulatives, loose parts, or even real leaves with the number cards. The children practice one-to-one correspondence by placing the correct number of items next to each numbered leaf.

  • Explore ordinal numbers and use the cards as visuals for the kids. Place a set of 5 leaves out on the table in a line. Place a number down under each leaf, moving from left to right. Point to each leaf and use the appropriate ordinal number “first, second, third, fourth, fifth” and have the kids help. You can move past fifth if your kids are ready for it.

There are so many more ways to use the leaf calendar numbers, too! But these ideas are a good place to start. Feel free to leave me a comment about how YOU and your students used the free printable.
