Weather Chart for Kids Free Printable

You’ll be amazed at everything you can do with this simple weather chart for kids! It’s just one of the free preschool printables that can have a big impact in your classroom.

“What’s the weather like today? Like today? Like today? What’s the weather like today? Let’s ask . . .”

That simple song, sung to the tune of “London Bridges” is the lead in to the Weather Reporter’s job of the day. Now that I just typed it, the song is again stuck in my head!

Do you have a Weather Reporter in your classroom? It’s one of the classroom jobs for preschool that my students have enjoyed.

And that job simply cannot be done without a weather graph!

Weather Chart for Kids

As I mentioned above, you can use weather graphs to teach a lot of concepts in preschool and kindergarten.

Things like:

• Vocabulary
• Scientific observation
• Critical thinking
• Counting
• Color identification
• Comparisons
• Basic graphing skills
• Sorting and grouping

All of that from one simple printable chart? Yes!

How to Make a Preschool Weather Chart

You can definitely make your own weather graph for the classroom. I know I created a few different versions before settling on the printable one you see here.

But over the years, I found that something simple was what worked best with my students. So often we find that simpler is better with kids, right?!

To prep this weather chart for kids, all you have to do is:

• Grab your own version at the bottom of this post.
• Download it and save it to your computer.
• Open the printable in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader.
• Print the weather chart.
• And you’re good to go!

Of course, if you want the chart to be reusable, you’ll want to laminate it or place it in a dry erase pocket. Otherwise, you can leave it as is!

How to Use the Weather Graph for Kids

Even though this weather chart is super simple, there are multiple ways you can use it in your classroom! I bet if you ask the kids, they’ll come up with even more that I haven’t thought of.

Once you have the weather graph ready to go, back it with some construction paper. Then place it up by your class calendar or somewhere on your circle time board.

It can even just go up by a window in your classroom. Or clip it to a clipboard and place it near your whole group spot. You just want it handy wherever you and the children meet together as a class.

Weather Chart During Whole Group

Each school day, ask a student to determine what the weather is like outside. This could be your Weather Reporter or your Leader-of-the-Day. If you don’t have a special job title, that’s okay too!

Have the chosen student share with the class what the weather is like outside. You can lead a short discussion about how this was determined:

• “We know it’s cloudy today because there are a lot of clouds in the sky.”
• “How can you tell it’s a rainy day?”

Then have your Weather Reporter color in the appropriate spot on the weather chart for kids. We tend to use a different color marker for each weather category, but it’s not always done consistently. I like working from left-to-right on the graph, as it helps with teaching directionality.

Once the day’s weather has been filled in, the children might want to make a few quick observations

• “Oh, rainy has 3 now!”
• “I think sunny’s going to win!”

At the end of the month, lead a longer discussion about your preschool weather chart. Here are some ideas to include:

• Count how many days each weather has.
• Write the appropriate numeral at the end of the line for each weather choice.
• Compare and contrast the weather options, discussing more, less, and equal.
• Discuss the seasons and what types of weather to expect for each one where you live.
• Declare a “winner” for the month’s weather.

Weather Chart for Kids During Small Groups

Of course, you can use the graphs outside of whole group, too! Small groups are a great way to explore the concept of weather with your students.

Pair the weather charts with the included weather cube. Your students can take turns rolling the cube and recording the weather that comes out on top.

Once every child has had a few turns with the weather cube and graph, discuss the findings! You can use the same discussion points I mentioned above during this time.

Use the Graphs in Your Preschool Centers

Why not place your weather charters for kids to use in classroom centers?

Your budding scientists can use them in the science center, documenting the weather they see out of the window.

Little mathematicians in the math center can take turns coloring the chart in. Once they’re done, the kids can count each of the weather results and write numbers on the chart.

These weather graphs would be great in the pretend play center, too! Perhaps you’ll set up a school dramatic play theme, or even one focused solely on the weather. The children can pretend to be teachers or meteorologists, using the weather charts as a fun, interactive prop.

You can also place your whole group weather graphs in one of your centers. If possible, try to keep the graphs from each month throughout the school year. You can laminate the charts, hole punch them, and make your own class weather book!

Update the book each month. Then place it in your reading, math, or science centers. I know this is a consistent hit with my students every time I’ve done so. I love hearing the children exclaim over a new observation they’ve made – “Look! In September, we had 10 sunny days. And in April we did, too!”
